I
have 25 years experience in education in College Station ISD. Currently
I am a librarian at A&M Consolidated High School. I am excited
about the opportunity to share my writing experiences with students.
My own writing career began in elementary school. I won a story contest
in the sixth grade, and a comment my teacher wrote on my paper started
me thinking that I might want to be an author someday.
I
do 4 presentations per day. Sessions can be divided between two schools
if desired. Class sizes may be as large as needed, as long as a microphone
system is provided. Presentations are between 40- 50 minutes each
depending on the age level.
During
my presentations, I share my life as a writer, when I began writing,
where my story ideas come from and how a book is produced. The students
also help me do an interactive storytelling of The Jalapeño
Man. I talk about reading and writing as skills that take practice
to produce good writers.
Recommendation
from Sandra Moore at Travis Elementary School in Mineral Wells, TX
"Debbie Leland was an engaging presenter. We squeezed 200 students at a time into our library, and the students were spellbound. Her educational expertise is evident in her presentation. She was so inspiring that a fifth grader was overheard to say, 'I know I was born to be a writer just like Mrs. Leland.'" skmoore@mwisd.esc11.net
